Check, clean fireplace before painting

DEAR MI-LING: I live in an old farmhouse (1940s era). There is a large red-brick fireplace taking up one end of the living room (no mantel, just brick). This is a very small room. Will it decrease the value of my home to paint this ugly red brick? Any suggestions on what color to use?

My walls are cream, woodwork is white, drapes are chocolate, my couch is floral and the carpet is beige.

DEAR SUE: This reminds me of a question I put in my book a few years ago. The lady said her fireplace was "fire engine red.”

It doesn’t sound like you live in an old farmhouse! Your décor sounds very inviting.

Although your home was built in the 1940s, you can update the fireplace and enhance the look and feel of your home, which could add value if done properly.

However, before you take the plunge, have your fireplace checked and cleaned by a professional. You can also talk to experts at your local brick company and ask if they can clean the surface of the brick.

Next, consider adding a mantel to your fireplace. This will distract you from the ugly red, when you add accessories to the mantel.

If that doesn’t work you can paint the fireplace. I have done this in the past with a cream wash. Check with your local paint store and find out what type of paint would work best for your situation.

If you have the resources, consult a professional brick or tile layer and reface your fireplace. There are so many options to choose from. Glass tiles are beautiful, as well as stone or granite. The options are unlimited.

I wouldn’t worry about decreasing the value of your home. All that doesn’t matter if you can’t enjoy your space now! Just to be on the safe side, incase you have a rare brick consult with the brick company first.
